Why Isn't My Business Showing Up in ChatGPT?

Is ChatGPT ignoring your business on purpose?

No. There is no blacklist and no penalty box. When ChatGPT skips your business, it is almost always one of five mechanical causes — and all five are fixable. This matters more every month: roughly 1 in 3 U.S. adults now uses an AI chatbot at least weekly (Pew Research via iQDigital, 2026), and Google AI Overviews appear in roughly half of Google searches (D&D SEO Services, 2026). Our Houston AI Visibility Index study measured a metro-wide median AIR Score of just 31/100 — in the market we've measured most closely, the typical business is largely invisible to AI. Deep AI Solutions is Texas-based, serving Austin and the broader Texas market, and the same five causes apply here. Below is each cause, a five-minute self-check, and the fix.

Cause 1: Your site never answers the actual question

AI assistants answer questions. If someone asks ChatGPT "who's a good plumber in Cedar Park" and your site is a logo, a photo slider, and a contact form, there is nothing for the model to cite. Pages built around direct answers get pulled; pages built around vibes don't.

Self-check (5 minutes): Write down the three questions a customer would actually ask an AI about your category. Search your own site for those questions. If no page answers any of them in plain sentences, this is your problem.

The fix: Publish answer-first pages — one real question per page, answered in the first 80 words, with specifics (service area, pricing logic, hours, credentials). This is the core of AI SEO, and it's content work, not magic. Bonus: 71.7% of ChatGPT citations come from pages that already have organic search presence (GrowingAI, 2026), so this work compounds with regular SEO.

Cause 2: Missing or wrong schema markup

Schema is structured data that tells machines what your page is — a business, a service, an FAQ. It matters measurably: FAQ-schema content is cited roughly 3x more often in Google AI Overviews (iQDigital, 2026), and the same machine-readability helps every engine that parses your site.

Self-check (5 minutes): Run your homepage through Google's Rich Results Test (search "rich results test"). Look for LocalBusiness, Service, and FAQPage types. If the result is empty or throws errors, you have a schema problem.

The fix: Add LocalBusiness schema with your exact name, address, and phone; add FAQPage schema to any page that answers questions; validate until errors clear. Keep it consistent with your Google Business Profile — mismatched data reads as unreliable to machines.

Cause 3: You're not in the Bing index

This is the one almost nobody checks. When ChatGPT grounds an answer with live search, it runs against the Bing index — not Google's. If Bing hasn't indexed your site, ChatGPT literally cannot cite it, no matter how good your Google rankings are.

Self-check (5 minutes): Go to Bing and search site:yourdomain.com. If few or no pages appear, you're invisible to ChatGPT's search grounding.

The fix: Set up Bing Webmaster Tools (free), submit your sitemap, and fix anything it flags. Many businesses never set this up because their SEO work has always centered on Google. It usually takes under an hour and it's one of the highest-leverage fixes on this list. We cover the Google-vs-AI distinction in more depth in Austin SEO vs AI visibility.

Cause 4: No third-party corroboration

AI models are trained to distrust self-reported claims. If the only place on the internet that says you're a great electrician is your own website, models hedge or skip you. They want corroboration: directory listings, review platforms, local press, industry associations, supplier pages.

Self-check (5 minutes): Ask ChatGPT directly: "What do you know about [your business name] in [your city]?" Then Google your business name plus your city. If the results are just your own site and social profiles, your corroboration layer is thin. (Related: does ChatGPT know about my business?)

The fix: Build consistent citations — same name, address, and phone everywhere — across the major directories and review platforms for your industry. Earn a handful of genuine third-party mentions. Volume matters less than consistency and legitimacy.

Cause 5: Your robots.txt blocks AI crawlers

Some websites — often on advice from a security plugin or an old SEO checklist — block AI crawlers like OpenAI's GPTBot in robots.txt. That's a self-inflicted invisibility order: you are telling the systems your customers use to never read your site.

Self-check (5 minutes): Load yourdomain.com/robots.txt in a browser. Look for lines like "User-agent: GPTBot" followed by "Disallow: /". If you see AI user agents being disallowed, you found the problem.

The fix: Remove the disallow rules for AI crawlers (or make them deliberate, not accidental). One caution: some site platforms and CDN firewalls block these bots at a level above robots.txt, so check your CDN's bot-management settings too.

One more thing: stale pages fade

Even after you fix all five causes, AI visibility isn't a set-and-forget project. Pages untouched for roughly 90 days see measurably fewer AI citations (iQDigital, 2026). The engines favor content that's maintained. That's why we treat AI visibility as an ongoing operating discipline — measured monthly, not audited once. Our Austin AI Visibility Index and the live national AI Visibility Index exist to make that measurement public and repeatable.

Find out which causes apply to your business

You could run all five self-checks by hand in about 25 minutes. Or run our free scanner, which checks your visibility across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and Perplexity and returns your AIR Score — Deep AI Solutions' composite 0-100 measure of mention, recommendation, and sentiment across all five engines.

Deep AI Solutions is Texas-based (Houston HQ), serving Austin and the broader Texas market. If the scan turns up problems you'd rather not fix yourself, our services run $1,299 to $5,999 per month, month-to-month, no setup fee. But run the scan first — it's free and it tells you exactly which of the five causes apply.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't ChatGPT mention my business at all?

Usually one of five mechanical causes: your site doesn't directly answer customer questions, your schema markup is missing or broken, your site isn't in the Bing index (which ChatGPT's search grounding uses), no third-party sources corroborate your business, or your robots.txt blocks AI crawlers. None of these are penalties — they're all checkable in minutes and fixable. A free multi-engine scan at deepaivisibility.com shows which apply to you.

Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing for search results?

Bing. When ChatGPT grounds an answer with live web search, it runs against the Bing index, not Google's. That means a business with strong Google rankings but no Bing presence can be completely invisible to ChatGPT's search-grounded answers. The check takes one minute: search site:yourdomain.com on Bing. If nothing appears, set up Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap.

How do I check if my robots.txt blocks AI crawlers?

Load yourdomain.com/robots.txt in any browser and look for AI user agents — OpenAI's GPTBot is the best-known — followed by a Disallow rule. If they're blocked, those AI systems can't read your site. Remove the disallow lines unless the block is deliberate. Also check your CDN or firewall's bot-management settings — some platforms block AI crawlers at a layer above robots.txt.

Does schema markup actually affect AI visibility?

Yes, measurably. FAQ-schema content is cited roughly 3x more often in Google AI Overviews (iQDigital, 2026), and structured data makes your business machine-readable to every engine that parses your site. At minimum, add LocalBusiness schema with your exact name, address, and phone, plus FAQPage schema on question-answering pages, and validate with Google's Rich Results Test until errors clear.

How long does it take to start showing up in ChatGPT after fixing these?

It varies by cause. Bing indexing and robots.txt fixes can take effect within days to weeks of the next crawl. Content and corroboration build more gradually as engines re-crawl and re-weigh sources. One constant: freshness matters — pages untouched for roughly 90 days see measurably fewer AI citations (iQDigital, 2026), so treat this as ongoing maintenance, not a one-time fix.

Is this a bigger problem in Austin specifically?

Austin's growth raises the stakes: the region added 27,200 jobs in 2025, the best job-growth rate of any top-50 U.S. metro (Opportunity Austin, April 2026), which means more competitors entering every category. Our Houston AI Visibility Index study found a metro-wide median AIR Score of 31/100 in that market — a benchmark for how invisible the typical local business can be to AI. In a market growing this fast, the businesses that fix it first take the recommendations.

Can I diagnose all of this for free?

Yes. Every self-check in this article uses free tools: Bing site search, Google's Rich Results Test, your own robots.txt, and asking ChatGPT directly about your business. Our scanner at deepaivisibility.com/#scanner is also free — it checks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and Perplexity in one pass and returns your AIR Score, so you see all five engines instead of testing one at a time.
